The IAM and Co. continues to meet on the 703 issues and the committeemen have identified processes and job responsibilities.  A proposal will be drafted and presented at an upcoming meeting.  The IAM committeemen are optimistic of a positive outcome on our concerns and issues.

Stewards Meeting Notes
Wednesday, July 23, 2008

The Plant wide memorial collection for Joe Rapp was a complete success with $1569 being collected.  You’ve done great work and the Rapp family has expressed their heartfelt thanks for the money, prayers, visits, phone calls, and the showing of support at Joe’s funeral.  The family has sent the IAM a thank you card.

Asbestos Exposure:  There was a lot of talk about asbestos exposure at the meeting today. Several IAM tradesmen were exposed to some ceiling tile that was glued to the walls of an area that was being demolished for renovation.  (The mastic contained the asbestos.)  It is reminded that any person working in the IAM trades may request testing on suspicious material that they think may contain asbestos, and see the report of that test.  Always assume that material is asbestos.  You do not have to be in a construction area to request testing.  Randy Richards reports that he is updating the training on asbestos with an upcoming training package.  (This will cover a gasket removal process also.)

Hazcom training:  Matt Louiso talked about the IAM’s commitment to support the Hazcom training program to promote safe working practices.  It is important to attend scheduled training and keep up on the latest rules, processes, and technical data concerning our safety.

Respirators:  If you need a respirator, go to the dispensary for an evaluation.  After the evaluation is complete, see Randy Richards for a training session and a fitting.  If you have a beard, you don’t have to shave.  The CO. issue a different type of face shield with a belt held filter.

Stewards Meeting Notes
Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

The Committee reports that they are having several issues with the 703 area management, (Don Gehres and Rich Donohue), about work being done by lab techs and other salaried employees.  Past guidelines have generally been tossed aside with an attitude of  “We can’t wait” and “we can do what we need to do”.  This attitude does little to foster respect for workers in the IAM trades and it is against the contract.  The IAM is committed to keeping work done by our trades people.   The Committee takes problems of this magnitude very seriously.

UPDATE:  The management of 703 will be coming to 3rd step to hear the complaints of the committee.

The Co. will surplus 4 Toolmakers next week and 4 SERO’s are expected to cover the surplus.  The committeemen of that area worked hard to lessen the impact of the job reduction.

There was discussion and concerns at today’s meeting about hiring IAM Tradesmen.  Now the Co. will only hire replacement trades, but there seems to be a lot of new salaried faces around the plant.  In the case of the issue with 703 covered above, salaried lab techs are doing traditional IAM work such as building up test rigs and stands.  The latest is the screen work used for test, traditionally done by 703 M/M’s.  They want to off load this work to another area.

Gun Raffle:  Stewards have gun raffle tickets for sale for a chance to win an Orion Arms AR-15.  Only 600 tickets are available at a cost of $3.00 each.

Cards were distributed at the meeting about the Health Care Campaign the AFL-CIO and the IAM are jointly involved with.  This is a way for you and family members to get involved and help change our health care in the USA.  Please fill out the card and return it to your steward and they will sent in.  No need for postage if you turn the cards in to the union.

Welcome back form sick leave:  Don Odor, MM

The Grand Lodge will be responsible for the dues finances to and from 4 local lodges out of District Lodge 34, due to problems of untimely return of dues dollars to the locals.  We will be part of a pilot program and if successful, may become a proposal at the Grand Lodge Convention in 2008.

Nominations for the Grand Lodge Convention were taken at the April meeting.  The election will be held on May 13th.  The GL Convention will be held from September 7~13, 2008. YOU MUST ATTEND THE MONTHLY LODGE MEETING TO VOTE OR HAVE AN ABSENTEE BALLET.  Please attend.

The following members, listed in alphabetical order, have been nominated to represent the lodge membership:

1. Paul Cooper

6. Frank Kammerer

2. Matt Finley

7. Jude Kollstedt

3. Darrell Friend

8. Matt Louiso

4. Butch Hennika

9. Caroll Smith

No update on the Tool Room or the IAS shop talks.  The Co. and Union had talks about a combination of trades and responsibilities.

Court Lillard and Fred Parr met with the Louisville district office of the Work Comp dept. and gave them feedback on problems that they have been seeing with our members.

Sub Contracting issues:  Many areas that have historically kept their normal work in house have been trying to contract that work out.  Stewards should remind management in the areas that they represent to keep the work in house. Our jobs are being sub-contracted out to outside workers, and the company is supplementing their work force when they do so.

Ladders with two green dots near the bottom of the left side base rail have already been inspected or repaired and are not included in the recall.  Sold at: Industrial supply stores and home centers nationwide from September 2007 through December 2007 for between $130 and $760.  Manufactured in: Mexico.

There is a flyer that has been sent to all stewards to place on the IAM boards with more information.
